What’s being billed as \u2018the largest internet protest in history\u2019 is underway today, with websites showing their opposition against the proposed\u00a0Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)<\/a>\u00a0and its sibling the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the US.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0support\u00a0and solidarity with this important protest,\u00a0I’ve changed the headers across all the urban75 homepages for the day (see above).<\/p>\n

Reddit<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0are among some of the big sites who have ‘gone dark’ today (i.e shut down for the day) to illustrate what might happen if SOPA became law.<\/p>\n

Here’s what I wrote about the proposed legislation on my sister site, Wirefresh.com<\/a><\/p>\n

The two bills \u2013 the\u00a0Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act \u2013 are intended to blacklist \u2018renegade\u2019 sites like Pirate Bay that share copyrighted films and music, and\u00a0make the\u00a0uploading clips of movies or TV shows to Facebook or YouTube a criminal act.<\/p>\n

Users streaming copyrighted content could face a five-year jail term, with sites offering pirated content being punished by being delisted on search engines \u2013 and potentially have their IP address blacklisted.<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t just be US users affected either:\u00a0Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa): how it could affect UK-based websites like Urban 75<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
