{"id":5778,"date":"2012-01-23T10:30:35","date_gmt":"2012-01-23T10:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=5778"},"modified":"2012-01-23T01:00:09","modified_gmt":"2012-01-23T01:00:09","slug":"volks-electric-railway-and-the-fabulously-eccentric-seaside-railway-brighton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/volks-electric-railway-and-the-fabulously-eccentric-seaside-railway-brighton\/","title":{"rendered":"Volk&#8217;s Electric railway and the fabulously eccentric Seaside Railway, Brighton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brighton-beach-volks-railway-01.jpg\" alt=\"Volk's Electric railway and the fabulously eccentric Seaside Railway, Brighton\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/remembering-the-brighton-west-pier-in-photos-part-one\/\" target=\"_blank\">beautiful West Pier<\/a> looks unlikely to rise from the depths again, there&#8217;s still some quirky attractions to be found around the south coast city of Brighton.<\/p>\n<p>One of my\u00a0favourites\u00a0is the Volk&#8217;s Electric Railway, which runs\u00a0parallel with the beach for around one and a quarter miles\u00a0(2 km), with several pedestrian crossings (above) giving sunbathers\u00a0access\u00a0on to Brighton&#8217;s famous beach.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brighton-beach-volks-railway-03.jpg\" alt=\"Volk's Electric railway and the fabulously eccentric Seaside Railway, Brighton\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The electric railway was opened in 1883 by Magnus Volk and originally ran for just a quarter of a mile on a narrow two foot\u00a0gauge.<\/p>\n<p>Since then the line has been extended,\u00a0re-gauged, shortened, closed and reopened, and now\u00a0operates between\u00a0Easter and September, with trains\u00a0running\u00a0every 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The railway has a gauge of 2 ft 8 1\u20442 in (825 mm), with trains powered by an electrified 110V DC\u00a0\u00a0third rail.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brighton-beach-volks-railway-02.jpg\" alt=\"Volk's Electric railway and the fabulously eccentric Seaside Railway, Brighton \" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>More photos and info:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/railway\/volks-electric-railway.html\" target=\"_blank\">Volk\u2019s Electric Railway, Brighton &#8211;\u00a0A trip on the oldest remaining operating electric railway in the world.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volk's_Electric_Railway\" target=\"_blank\">Railway History<\/a>] &#8211;
