{"id":684,"date":"2005-04-23T18:05:00","date_gmt":"2005-04-23T18:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/u75blog\/?p=684"},"modified":"2005-04-23T18:05:00","modified_gmt":"2005-04-23T18:05:00","slug":"684","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/684\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Happy St George&#8217;s Day!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/london\/images\/lon575.jpg\" title=\"\" width=\"350\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/><font color=\"#808080\">Royal Society of St George at Covent Garden, London<\/font><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve got to feel sorry for the English. <\/p>\n<p>Unlike my Welsh compatriots and fellow Celts, the Irish and the Scots, they&#8217;ve never got the hang of this Patron Saint day thing.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the fact that no one seems to know who the chuffin&#8217; &#8216;eck St George was (actually a Turkish fella who never set foot in England), it&#8217;s hard to find anyone capable of summoning up much enthusiasm for the day.<\/p>\n<p>Caught between the fear of appearing racist with too much flag waving and looking deeply uncool by hanging out with hanky-waving Morris dancers, most seem to seek solace in pubs bedecked in St George&#8217;s flags. <\/p>\n<p>Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it&#8217;s not exactly what I&#8217;d call the best way to celebrate England&#8217;s long history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy St George&#8217;s Day!
