March 2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/kings-cross-western-concourse-02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Situated betwixt the\u00a0breathtaking\u00a0Gothic\u00a0splendour\u00a0of St Pancras station and the\u00a0attractively\u00a0austere\u00a0fa\u00e7ade\u00a0of the original 1852 Kings Cross station, the new\u00a0semi-circular concourse provides\u00a0space\u00a0for the rapidly\u00a0expanding numbers of\u00a0passengers\u00a0using the station.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photos of the new King's Cross concourse, designed by John McAslan and Partners, London. March 2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/kings-cross-western-concourse-03.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The building triples the available circulation space and serves departing\u00a0passengers\u00a0only, with\u00a0arriving passengers exiting through the original front doors of the station (the horrendous 1970s &#8216;temporary&#8217;\u00a0buildings\u00a0in front of the station will be demolished later this year).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photos of the new King's Cross concourse, designed by John McAslan and Partners, London. March 2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/kings-cross-western-concourse-04.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 7,500 square-metre, two-storey concourse is dominated by its white\u00a0metal\u00a0roof, engineered by Arup, who say it, &#8220;rises up a great steel stalk in the centre and then spreads into a tree-like canopy of intersecting branches, before descending into a ring of supports at the circumference. In so doing, it avoids the need to drop columns into the ticket hall of the underground station underneath the main space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photos of the new King's Cross concourse, designed by John McAslan and Partners, London. March 2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/kings-cross-western-concourse-05.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Incorporated\u00a0into the roof is 1,400 photovoltaic panels, which are expected\u00a0to generate about ten per cent of the building\u2019s energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>The half-a-billion pound project also included the restoration of the old station building and the creation of a new platform at King&#8217;s Cross, daftly named &#8216;Platform 0.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photos of the new King's Cross concourse, designed by John McAslan and Partners, London.
