{"id":7727,"date":"2012-03-20T12:11:51","date_gmt":"2012-03-20T12:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=7727"},"modified":"2012-03-25T14:33:19","modified_gmt":"2012-03-25T13:33:19","slug":"1001-tv-sets-slowly-tune-into-white-noise-david-hall-ambika-p3-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/1001-tv-sets-slowly-tune-into-white-noise-david-hall-ambika-p3-london\/","title":{"rendered":"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise,  David Hall, Ambika P3, London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-01.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Entitled \u00a0&#8216;1001 TV Sets (End Piece)&#8217;, 1972-2012,&#8217; this work by video art pioneer David Hall\u00a0at London&#8217;s Ambika P3\u00a0features over 1,000 TV sets, all tuned to random terrestrial\u00a0stations.<\/p>\n<p>It proved to be an unexpectedly fantastic experience and it&#8217;s already on my &#8220;must come back&#8221; list.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-02.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arriving at the \u00a0cavernous underground building, you&#8217;re greeted by a full-on assault on your senses, with the hall echoing to\u00a0a cacophony of TV sets, all blasting out different stations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-03.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The piece was commissioned to coincide with the end of analogue TV in the UK on April 18, and\u00a0as the signals are turned off between April 4-14th, the sound will gradually change from live transmissions to the\u00a0eerie\u00a0hiss of white noise.<\/p>\n<p>(Note to the more literal readers: this isn&#8217;t an exact and precise diagrammatic representation of the state of analogue transmission in the UK. It&#8217;s an art piece interpreting and visualising the process of the nationwide analogue switch off.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-04.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were lucky to arrive at a\u00a0particularly\u00a0good time: Liverpool were playing Stoke, so the fans&#8217; chanting was\u00a0mixing\u00a0in with the religious\u00a0exhalations\u00a0of a congregation on BBC&#8217;s Hymns of \u00a0&#8216;Songs Of Praise.&#8217; It made for a <em>wonderful<\/em> juxtaposition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-05.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The room is more or less pitch black, with only the shifting glow of the TV sets illuminating the concrete walls.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-06.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-07.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s TVs everywhere in the main hall, so you can&#8217;t escape the noise.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-08.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/david-hall-end-piece-ambika-p3-09.jpg\" alt=\"1001 TV sets slowly tune into white noise, David Hall, Ambika P3, London, March 2012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I loved this piece.
