get a decent set and they can sound truly incredible, and advances in\u00a0technology\u00a0have made the pads feel much more lifelike and responsive.<\/p>\n<p>Trouble is that\u00a0whatever savings you make in the overall kit size has to be\u00a0offset\u00a0by the amp you&#8217;re going to need to lug around with you &#8211; a job which can become a bit tedious if you start gigging regularly.<\/p>\n<p>But once it&#8217;s all done &#8211; and you&#8217;ve\u00a0taken\u00a0a bit of time to get the tuning right &#8211; you&#8217;ve got a kit that is easily good enough for playing live in small venues, and fine for bigger ones too so long as there&#8217;s enough mics to pick up the sound.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/bbc-maida-vale-studio-mv3-09.jpg\" alt=\"A look around BBC's Maida Vale Studio MV3, Delaware Road, London, September 2016\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using the Pearl kit for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-look-around-bbcs-wonderful-maida-vale-studio-mv3-west-london\/\">BBC live session in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The hardware<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The kit comes with pretty solid hardware, a decent enough 13&#8243; music hall sensation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrsmills.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mrs Mills Experience<\/a> &#8211; I started using the kit for live work.<\/p>\n<p>Given the old-time nature of the music, I started using a super stripped down set-up consisting of the just the snare, the\u00a0narrow 20\u2033 x 8\u2033 bass drum and one, teensy-weensy 10\u2033 x 5\u2033 floating tom.<\/p>\n<p>The cymbal set up was kept equally minimalistic, employing the rather average 13\u2033 Pearl hi-hats and a 16\u2033 Pearl cymbal that came bundled with the Pearl Traveller kit.<\/p>\n<p>The 16&#8243; and then being invited to join <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Monochrome_Set\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Monochrome Set<\/a> &#8211; \u00a0I decided to invest a bit more dosh into the kit, as well as adding a few antique percussive parts from my original (ahem) &#8216;pop star&#8217; Mapex MPX steel snare<\/a> was an incredible bargain for around \u00a3120 and sounds great. It&#8217;s got a fabulously crisp sound, and is really well-built for the price.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0recommend\u00a0you\u00a0definitely\u00a0put it on your short list if you&#8217;re looking for a small, loud, great sounding snare.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Oh hi, hi hats<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The horrible Pearl hi hats that came with the Traveller kit had to go, so after \u00a0trying out a host of combinations at DrumShack, I\u00a0eventually\u00a0settled for a 13&#8243;\u00a0Zildjian A Custom Projector top hat with a 1980s vintage Paiste 2002 Sound Edge bottom. \u00a0It sounds fabulous!<\/p>\n<p>I still need to get a decent ride cymbal and after trying out a load of them at the Drum Shack have\u00a0realised\u00a0that to get anything with a decent tone, I&#8217;m going to have to spend well over a \u00a3100. the stunning Sonor\u00a0Jungle Set in piano black above is\u00a0causing\u00a0all sorts of\u00a0convulsions\u00a0in my wallet, although it&#8217;s not cheap at around \u00a3600.<\/p>\n<p>The Sonor is made up of a\u00a016&#8243;
