Barratt Homes have revealed\u00a0details\u00a0of their new ‘Brixton Square’ housing development on\u00a0Coldharbour\u00a0Lane, Brixton, with the artists’ impression summoning up what looks like a set of bland council offices.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite being attractively billed as ‘Brixton Square’, as far as I can see there’ll be no open spaces for the public to enjoy – in fact it pretty much looks like a private, gated community (along the lines of the adjacent block).<\/p>\n

Prices are, as you might expect, completely out of reach for many local residents, with a small one bedroom flat starting at a cool quarter of a million pounds.<\/p>\n

There is no affordable or social\u00a0housing\u00a0provision in this large,\u00a0five\/seven storey\u00a0development of “117 bespoke one and two bedroom apartments.”<\/p>\n

Brixton Square is\u00a0apparently\u00a0‘launching’ this autumn (whatever that means) with buyers able to move in from summer 2013.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0seems more than a bit confused where Brixton actually is – this image above features Canary\u00a0Wharf\u00a0tube station, while another ‘local’ photo shows Borough market.<\/p>\n

I’m happy to see Brixton regenerating, but I’m not sure upmarket gated communities with no social or\u00a0affordable\u00a0housing is the way forward. In fact, I know it’s not.<\/p>\n
