{"id":91,"date":"2009-07-12T20:52:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-12T20:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/u75blog\/?p=91"},"modified":"2009-07-12T20:52:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-12T20:52:00","slug":"zebra-driven-carriage-in-brixton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/zebra-driven-carriage-in-brixton\/","title":{"rendered":"Zebra-driven carriage in Brixton!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had this fascinating photo forwarded to us of a zebra-driven carriage leaving Brixton and heading for Stockwell.<\/p>\n<p>The photo wasn&#8217;t dated, but I&#8217;m guessing that it was taken around 1915 (electrified trams didn&#8217;t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/brixton-trams-history.html\">arrive in Brixton<\/a> until 1904 so it must be after then). <\/p>\n<p>The only real clue is the advertisement for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/quin-and-axtens.html\">Quin and Axtens<\/a> on the railway bridge, although that seems to have changed regularly &#8211; witness the different styles seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/brixtonroad6.html\">1920<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/brixtonroad3.html\">a year later<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t even work out what the carriage is &#8211; according to <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"8\" alt=\"external link\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/images\/web01.gif\" width=\"10\" border=\"0\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cart\">wikipedia<\/a> there&#8217;s endless permutations for such vehicles, so it could be a trap, a gig, a fly or something else entirely. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"357\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/images\/zebra-cab-brixton.jpg\" width=\"425\" \/> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Read more here: <a title=\"Zebra carriage in Brixton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/zebra-taxi-cab.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/zebra-taxi-cab.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had this fascinating photo forwarded to us of a zebra-driven carriage leaving Brixton and heading for Stockwell.
