Brixton: restaurant
We're not really 'foodie' type folk, but we enjoy a good meal as much as the next fella. Here's just a few of the many restaurants to be found in Brixton...

we like!ASMARA 386 Coldharbour Lane (Opp. Dogstar)
Serving up a very unusual mix of Eritrean food in a relaxing environment, the fare varies wildly, from weird, mysterious stews to more familiar Mediterranean-style dishes.

we like!we like!we like!BAHN THAI Coldharbour Lane SW9
Formerly known as the 'Oriental Cottage' (and run by the same people), this Thai restaurant has been pleasantly revamped with a new, smaller menu that has attracted warm praise from the urban75 regulars.Always attracts a good crowd and you can watch the madness of Coldharbour Lane go by as you wolf down your sweet and sour.

we like!we like!we like!BABALOU St Matthews Church Brixton Hill SW2
Situated in an old crypt beneath St Matthew's Church, the capacious subterranean space of Babalou (formerly Bah Humbug) exudes an intimate, Moroccan-themed warmth, illuminated by candles.

We gorged on delicious starters of an Asparagus, Courgette and Mozzarella Wrap followed by a superb Crispy Cantonese Mock Duck. The quality of the food was excellent, although perhaps a bit pricey for Brixton cheapskates. The veggie choice was limited to two main courses, so we hope that they're regularly changed.

With a positively evil cocktail bar on the premises, we'd recommend Babalou as a perfect venue for a special occasion - or just a damn good meal.

we like!we like!we like!BONNINGTON CENTRE CAFÉ 11 Vauxhall Grove, SW8
Not even remotely in Brixton, but this mighty fine café is well worth mentioning. Originally run by squatters, this no-nonsense eaterie serves up exceptionally cheap vegetarian food (a three course meal is around a tenner). Bring along your own booze and join in with the singalongs at the piano afterwards.
Mon - Sun 7pm -11pm, nearest tube: Vauxhall

we like!we like!BAZE II BAZE Tunstall Road SW9
Currently closed and expected to reopen as a late license bar/club.

we like!we like!BUTTERFLY 370a Coldharbour Lane SW9
It doesn't have the most inviting of frontages with thick curtains doing their best to dissuade the curious, but this friendly West African restaurant serves up some great value, authentic cuisine, although veggies may well wish they stayed at home.

we like!we like!we like!BRUNO'S 424 Coldharbour La SW9
Right in the heart of Coldharbour Lane, this vegetarian, vegan and organic licensed cafe was previously known as Cafe Pushkar. Urban75 readers have described enjoying an 'excellent panini of veggie sausage and sweet red onions with a side salad' with 'really good coffee too.' It's open late on Thurs-Sat. Recommended.

we like!we like!we like!FERNDALES Ferndale Rd SW9 One of Brixton's better kept secrets, this charming bistro is basically a fantastic pizzeria given a French twist. The value for money is truly exceptional, plus the service is friendly and personal. They also have three open-air tables, just in case the great British Summer finally comes up trumps. Can't really recommend this place highly enough! (Closed Mondays)

we like!we like!FUJIYAMA Vining Street SW9 PHOTO
Long-running and highly recommended Japanese noodle bar serving up a kick ass ramen soup. Open till 11pm (midnight weekends)

we like!we like!we like! MoCa (Dogstar) 389 Coldharbour Lane, SW9
A new, modern Caribbean restaurant on the first floor of the Dogstar bar. The u75 review team declared it one of our favourite restaurants in Brixton! The callalloo fritters were crisp and ungreasy, breadfruit was perfectly served, the jerk pork fiery and tasty, the freshly made sauces/relishes were excellent and the veggie options were perfectly judged. Recommended! UPDATE NOV 2005: Rumours are that the restaurant will be closing soon, so please ring up before setting out.

The bar serves an extensive list of Martinis and cocktails, with pizza, pasta and a creative menu a la carte. Prices are from £10-£15 per person plus wine. we like!NOODLE HOUSE 426 Coldharbour Lane SW9
Conveniently situated right next to the Prince Albert and 414 Club, this no-frills Japanese noodle bar is a great cheap fill-up before a night on the town. Inside, the theme is spartan, but at these prices, who's complaining?!
phone 020 7274 1492

we like!we like!O CANTINHO DE PORTUGAL 135 Stockwell Rd, SW9
Authentic no-frills Portuguese with good homely cooking. Split into a bar and slightly more formal dining room this place also has two menus dominated by seafood and meat. Huge portions mean you will eat and drink to bursting point for £8. Come during the football season for atmospheric showings of FC Porto on the big screen! (review by Mr Retro)

Now the Brixton Bar and Grill...we like!we like!PANGAEA 15 Atlantic Rd SW9
Previously an excellent late night drinking den, Pangaea offers a great range of pizza/pasta with cheap 6 quid all-in offer at lunchtimes. Good veggie selection too.

we like!we like!SATAY BAR 447 Coldharbour Lane SW9
Stylish, trendy and reasonably priced, this bustling restaurant/bar has been part of Brixton's nightlife for years. The Asian cuisine is good value and the fabulous cocktails can round off the night in some style! disabled friendly disabled access
