The Rochdale Canal
Opened in 1804, this was the first trans-Pennine canal route, although its profitability nose-dived with the opening of the Manchester and Leeds Railway in 1841.
After a long, slow decline, the canal was almost unusable by the 1960s, but recent restoration work and grants are putting the canal back to full functionality.
