Winchelsea in the distance

Once one of the most powerful ports of England, the town lost its battle with the sea in 1287 in a mighty storm that changed the whole coastline between it and Rye.

Before its destruction, a new town had been planned, created on a grid of squares on a defensible hill peninsula, blessed and furthered by King Edward I.
