Built over a 40-foot-wide canal created to drain the seriously contaminated 'Collect Pond' in the early 1800s, Canal Street came into being around 1820.
The 48-acre spring-fed Collect Pond was Manhattan's main source of drinking water from pre-colonial times, with its attractive pastoral setting drawing toffs, fishermen, and ice skaters in the winter.
