Once a boggy land inhabited by gypsies and plagued by "noxious mists and fogs" Putney Heath was established as a public space in 1871 after a long legal battle with the Lord of the Manor, Earl Spencer, who wanted to enclose the common and sell off land for building.
Some of the earliest aviation and railway experiments took place on the Commons, including the ill-fated 1912 flight attempt of the fiendishly cunning (but completely ineffective) flapping aircraft, Passat's Ornithopter.
