We’ve always been big fans of the folks at the Duckie Club, and we went along to their ‘Gross Indecency’ night in the delightful Camden Centre.
The event took place on the same day as London Gay Pride, and was themed to be an illicit gay club in the early 1960s before the sexual offences bill was passed (this legalied homosexual acts in private for consenting adults over 21).
In the early-1960s, homosexuality was a criminal act, so the flyer advised clubbers to, ‘Please try to attend with a member of the opposite sex for your own protection.’
Here’s who were invited: ‘Effeminate dilly boys, dusty dykes, divers, modest mods, retrosexual rockers, sister george, closet cases, toffs, spivs, Belgravia brasses, married men, Jamaican sailors, ladies in tweed and the criminal underworld.’
We had a ball.

Hi there, I’m the guy who was wearing the sunglasses, grey suit and fanning myself. Have you got any full-length shots of me, as I was wearing high heeled shoes!
Unfortunately a combination of:
(a) your feet moving so fast and
(b) me being pissed
…meant that I failed to grab a shot of your fabulous footware, although I think one of my friends did.
Sadly, she managed to leave the camera in the cab, but with luck she might get it back from the cab company – I’ll drop you a line if she has a picture.
