Putting up a strong challenge to become my cafe of choice when I’m in the Tottenham Court Rd/Covent Garden/Bloomsbury area is the rather lovely Damson Cafe on St Giles High Street.
It’s not a lot to look at from the outside, but inside the place is bright and airy, with a counter veritably overflowing with tasty snacks.
The cakes were so good that my normally sweet-resistant friend turned into something of a ravenous beast, scoffing two of the things down in a matter of minutes.
The coffee didn’t disappoint either, with Square Mile coffee and a La Marzocco GB5 2 group espresso machine serving up some of the finest brews you’ll find in the area.
Damson serves breakfast from all day, with porridge and granola options, and there’s also a wide range of brunch and lunch options, plus salads, soups, stews and sandwiches.
I don’t eat meat, but apparently the Brioche French toast with bacon, banana and maple syrup is a thing of some wonder.
See their full menu here.
Damson is located a short stroll from Tottenham Court Road and Covent Garden tube station, almost in the shadow of Centre Point. If you’re heading their way, be sure to call ahead if it’s late afternoon because they appear to close quite early.

This is now a Ramen bar. Apparently very popular judging by the permanent queue that is outside when they are open.
