In photos: BBC’s historic Maida Vale studios – a look around Studio 4 before it closes forever

A complex of seven sound studios, Maida Vale Studios have been in use by the BBC since the 1930s, but the BBC has recently announced plans to vacate the premises by 2025 and move its live music base to Stratford in east London.

A few years back, I was recording a session for BBC6 Music in the large MV3 studio, and was back again recently to record a live session in the MV4 studio.

Here’s some photos from my visit:

I was using a Gretsch Catalina Drum Kit. with Mapex 13″ piccolo steel snare. Please excuse the shonky Pearl crash ride!

Each musician gets their own, old school unit for setting their monitor levels.

No idea what this does, but it looks delightfully vintage.

I’m a loud drummer, so found myself surrounded by sound deafening ‘baffle’ boards.

If you like corridors, you’ll love the Maida Vale studios!
