Roosevelt Island is an island in New York City’s East River, and lies between Manhattan Island to the west, and the borough of Queens, on Long Island, to the east.
It’s roughly two miles long, and in the 2020 census registered a population of 11,722.
The New York City Subway’s 63rd Street Line, planned since 1965 with a direct island station, didn’t open for 34 years.
The Tramway had been intended as a temporary mode of transport until the subway station opened, but is still running today after a comprehensive reconstruction in 2010.
The cantilever Queensboro Bridge (aka 59th Street Bridge) was completed in 1909, connecting the Long Island City neighbourhood in the borough of Queens with the East Midtown and Upper East Side neighbourhoods in Manhattan,
The bridge consists of five steel spans measuring 3,725 ft (1,135 m) long; including approaches, its total length is 7,449 ft (2,270 m).
The bridge passes over Roosevelt Island.
We were lucky enough to know someone living in the Cornell Campus, and their apartment offered spectacular views (see below).
