The Cinque Ports website provides this potted history of the town:
Tenterden is an historic town in Kent, England. It is situated on the Weald, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Ashford. Tenterden has a long and rich history, dating back to the Roman times.
The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and was granted its first charter by King Edward I in 1295.
Tenterden was a thriving wool and cloth town in the Middle Ages, and was known for its high-quality woollen goods.
Tenterden began to decline in importance as a wool and cloth town in the 16th century. However, the town remained a popular market town, and was also a centre of the hop industry.
In the 19th century, Tenterden became a popular seaside resort.
The town’s well-preserved medieval centre and its beautiful countryside attracted many visitors.
Tenterden was also known for its lively arts and culture scene, and was home to a number of artists and writers, including H.G. Wells and Edward Thomas.
