Work continues apace on The Shard tower at London Bridge, which will be the tallest building in the European Union when completed next year.

Also set to be the 45th tallest building in the world, the 1,017 ft (310 m) Shard will be the second tallest free-standing structure in the UK after the 1,084 ft (330.4m) Emley Moor transmitting station.

When completed, the tower will contain 72 floors, plus 15 further radiator floors in the roof, and be clad entirely in glass.

The viewing gallery and open-air observation deck – and yes, I really want to get up there sharpish! – will be on the top (72nd) floor.

According to Wikipedia, by March 2011, pouring of the concrete floors had reached level 50 and progression on the towers cladding had reached level 38.
