Last week I had the absolute pleasure of watching the Grammy-winning, blues legend Bobby Rush perform a superb set at the Camden Jazz Cafe.
Born Emmett Ellis Jr. on November 10, 1933, the ‘King of the Chitlin’ Circuit’ is the oldest living blues legend still active on the circuit, and he wowed the crowd with his sharp wit, deft dance moves and powerful voice.
In his long career, Rush has encountered musical greats such Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Jimmy Reed, and in 2017, at the ripe old age of 83, he won his first Grammy Award for the album Porcupine Meat.
The drummer was a joy to watch, with rock solid timing.
Rush knew how to work a stage and any singer could learn something from his natural charm and presence.
Like a seasoned pro, the second the set was over he was at the front shifting CDs.
